At one time, dietitians were only required for people who have had a surgery or a disease. For example, people who experienced heart attacks or had survived one were advised to consult a dietitian. More often than not, hospitals provided the dietitians themselves. The dietitian prepared a diet chart, which was given to the patient as and when he or she was discharged. This was the scenario in the year 2000. Now as we are nearing 2017, the word dietitian has become as common as the word diet. Thanks to books and newspapers, everybody is aware of dietitians like Rujuta Diwekar and Pooja Makhija. The success of books written by these two dietitians proves their popularity. Now, dietitians are just a call away. Nobody needs to get a disease or a disorder for consulting them.
Why are dietitians important?
- As per research conducted by National Center for Biotechnology Information, India is home to 62 million diabetic individuals. At the way it is progressing, it is going to become an epidemic. The prevalence of the disease clearly shows that there is something wrong with the diet of an average Indian, hence the need of dietitian.
- It is often very difficult to follow a diet without motivation and encouragement. A dietitian can provide both.
- With the fitness industry growing (it is valued at 4,500 Cr) at a fast rate, dietitians are needed for complementing physical workouts.
